Time for a quick plug, in case you haven't already seen my
Wellingtonista post on the subject. From 8pm tonight at
Happy, a group of local musicians will be gathering random bits of electronic machinery to make music together. This is the result of a
workshop that was held a couple of weeks ago at the Arts Centre, and is the first in a series of events called
bleep.
They are being organised by the
While_you_were_sleeping collective, who have run electronic / ambient / experimental gigs by major international electronic artists (
Biosphere,
Monolake) as well as local acts such as
Jet Jaguar,
seht,
Aquaboogie and
Signer. Thanks to Damian (aka
frey) for putting this event together.

Shit, I forgot, and didn't get your post until today! (stupid work-based internet!)
How did it go?
I enjoyed it. The weather must have put a lot of people off, performers as well as audience, since only 4 of the 8 musicians turned up. Still, that made it a little more manageable.
Even with just the four of us, we managed to surprise ourselves with the range of sounds we produced. Some of it was very out-there free noise or soundscapes, but it occasionally crystallised into something more melodic and rhythmic. At times we got into a bit of a techno or hip-hop feel, sometimes a bit more rocky (thanks to Morris and his fuzzed-up violin/guitar/typewriter thinggy) and sometimes even vaguely jazzy.
Oh, and Stuart (one of the guys from the workshop who couldn't make it to the gig) and I have been having a little discussion about the possibilities of improvised electronic music on his blog.
