A bibulous meme

File under: , ,

It looks like my quest (to drink at every bar in central Wellington this year) has caught on. First, Jo, then Brenda and now Penny have all posted their own lists of bars, and are crossing off their conquests as they go. If every WellUrban reader followed the example, we'd go a long way to creating a boom for the lcoal hospitality (and hepatology) industry.

The list has had to evolve over time, given the number of openings, closures and revamps, and also because I've reconsidered my decisions about whether certain places count as bars. In particular, I've gratefully accepcted Brenda's suggestion not to include Hog's Breath, but I can't quite agree that Hede counts as a bar. I've also omitted a couple of places that are right on the cusp of opening. Finally, I've reluctantly had to remove Il Casino: while there's still a chance that it will re-open in some form, it's unlikely that it will have the same name and style.

I end up with a total of 154 currently open bars, of which I have sampled 126 this year: that's nearly 82% done. Here's my list (and if you look closely, you might find a clue to the current mystery bar).

126 bars in 30 weeks -- you're a machine! A very, very well-oiled machine.

Unless you got there on the weekend, you'll have to take Pound off the list... as it has closed (to be replaced)

George: no, I didn't make it there. I had heard that it was going to close, but didn't think it would happen so soon.

I presume that somewhere else will open to meet the demand: I don't think Monkey Bar will suffice.

Have you checked the Apartment bar in the Hannahs Factory building? I'm not sure if it is actually open to the public or not but the lights are usually on and I have seen people coming and going.

I think Apartment has been converted to offices: a pity, since I quite liked it. The space next door that used to be Svago has been turned into a gallery, though I think it might also have a cafe.

Tom, I noticed the other night that the Green Parrot (local hangout of Vigo Mortenson) has a neon sign proclaiming it to be a bar, yet it is not on your list.

What's going on? You don't like martinis served with a stack of white bread?

A lot of places call themselves a "cafe & bar" or similar, but couldn't really be described as a bar per se. I've been reasonably generous in those cases (e.g. the Lido), but I don't really see the Parrot as a bar.

On the other hand, any place frequented by Winston...
